What is it?
The Owensboro Police Department is glad to announce its launch of “Eye on Owensboro” campaign. This initiative will allow residents and businesses to register their security cameras with the Owensboro Police Department. This is an opportunity for our business owners and residents to become a part of our neighborhood’s crime prevention efforts. Our community’s security cameras help to deter crime and they can also assist in solving a crime after it has happened. The availability for our police officers to know where surveillance cameras are located will benefit our entire community and will enhance “Excellent Outcomes through Community Partnerships.”
Why it’s important?
Numerous arrests have been made as a result of the public viewing surveillance videos posted through the Department’s website, www.owensboro.org/police/ and now our “Eye on Owensboro” campaign will allow the public to register their contact information, camera type and location of their cameras with the Owensboro Police Department. Those who register will only be contacted by the Owensboro Police Department if there is a criminal incident that occurs in the vicinity of the registered camera. The police department will not be able to view private cameras through “Eye on Owensboro”, only their physical location will be compiled on a comprehensive list.
When a crime occurs, our officers and detectives currently canvas the immediate area in which the crime occurred to see if residential or business surveillance cameras may have recorded the crime in progress. Then the police department works with the camera owner to retrieve the video for investigative purposes, and when helpful, posts the video through the department’s Website. Multiple videos have been posted since the department began using these tools, resulting in several arrests. This new initiative will enable officers to have the information regarding cameras at their fingertips and will assist with identifying suspects involved in criminal conduct.
